Creativity is a must on this one.
You will be assigned a system by random selection of a card.
For all options, you need to present information about the system and about a disease which effects that system. In addition, you must include a bibliography with at least 5 sources in correct format.
|
For the system you should include • the function (s) • the anatomy • how to keep it healthy

Options:

Write and illustrate a children’s story (fiction) or children’s magazine (non- fiction). It must be a minimum of 15 pgs and a maximum of 30 pgs. I will look for depth of research and information. It needs to have a cover (front and back). The last 2 pages (#16 or #31) should be your bibliography (a listing of all the sources you utilized) and a list of endnotes. Endnotes are footnotes. You will number them in text and then include all of the information in order by number. You should footnote any numbers and facts which you find in only 1 source. You may need another page with picture credits.
You may include articles on the system and on the disease or work both into your story.
Make it look polished and professional. Grammar and spelling DO count (this may be science, but we are speaking English).
I will look for appropriate illustrations(they should go with the text) . They may be drawings or from magazines or computer pictures. But, if you don’t draw them yourself, you need to have a picture credits page (stealing pictures is plagiarism)- use the bibliography format.
You must have at least 5 sources. And, you must hand in your notes with your project. These may be note cards or they may be sheets which you have highlighted. You should have notes from all 5 sources you used.
Bibliography- at least 5sources.
Option B: TV show: Create your own Bill Nye (or what ever you choose to call yourself) science show. If you have never seen the show ask to borrow a video to watch.
It must be handed in on a VHS tape. Do NOT include the out-takes. I want a finished product (and only the finished product)!!! I will look for polish- it should
look like you have planned and rehearsed it (not just off the cuff). Avoiding "ahs" and "ums" will count more than flashy videography.
It must have at least 2 of these types of segments: (remember, you must include the answers to the questions you selected!)
"Consider the following"- a segment where you give the facts
"Try this"- an experiment you can do at home
"Way cool scientist"- a report on a leading scientist in that field.
Music video- a video which summarizes some of the important factual info
Remember to answer all the questions about your system and disease. I will look for depth of info. Humor is good, but be sure that there is a lot of science in this video.
System
• the function (s)
• the anatomy: of the organ/system itself as well as in the body
• how to keep it healthy
You must include a bibliography in scientific format with at least 5 sources. It may be in the form of "credits" at the end or it may be a paper you hand in separately.
Bibliography- at least 5sources.
The Anatomy and physiology that you need to know for the AP Exam might seem like a foreign language to you. Sometimes, putting some of the technical words into songs that define them will help you remember what they mean.
For example:
|
Song: (to the tune of “Yakity-Yak”) Take out the H’s and the O’s! Or you’ll get water in your nose. It’s de-hy-dra-tion syn-the-sis. Water’s a product, yes it is! Yakity-yak, water don’t come back.
Technical information: Dehydration synthesis is a reaction in which two smaller molecules are joined together by removing 2 hydrogens (H’s) and 1 oxygen (O’s) from the molecules, thus producing water and a larger molecule.
|
Song: (to the tune of “My Boyfriend’s Back” – otherwise known as the Hess truck commercial jingle) The H’s are back and so are the O-O’s Hey–nah, Hey-nah HYDROLYSIS! The starch splits to glucose, protein to aminos Hey-nah, Hey-nah HYDROLYSIS! Hey! It’s digestion in the body! Hey! How we split the macromole (cules) The H’s are back and so are the O-O’s Hey–nah, Hey-nah HYDROLYSIS! Technical information: Hydrolysis (hydro = “water” and lysis = “split”) is a reaction in which large macromolecules are broken down into their basic units through adding water (H2O). Proteins are broken into amino acids, or peptides. Complex carbohydrates like starch are broken into simple sugars like glucose. This is the reaction that occurs during digestion.

Your task: You will be assigned a system on which to report. Look up information on that system. Write a song based on that information. You must use a familiar existing tune and put your new lyrics to the known tune (like above or the “Iodine” song from earlier in the year). When you turn in your song, use the above examples as a guide: (1) write the technical information that you are trying to remember, and finally (2) write your song (you must hand in a printed version of this song along with the name of the tune).
Bibliography- at least 5 sources.
Make a poster or 3D model of your system. Be sure to show all the major organs and label them. Spelling and neatness will count on your labels. You must draw the poster, you may not just print it off the computer. Use color.
Research a disease of that system utilizing at least five (5) sources. You may use no more than 1 encyclopedia. Journals are the best sources.Make a pamphlet about the disease. The paper for the pamphlet may be no larger than 11 x 14", and the pamphlet, when folded, should fit into a legal envelope. Include a picture/slogan on the cover as well as your name. Inside you will report about causes, symptoms and treatments/cures for your disease.
You must use correct scientific footnotes in your writing (format attached). On the back of the pamphlet include your literature cited references. The pamphlet should be typewritten. Your goal is to create a professional looking product. This should be a pamphlet which people would be interested in and pick up to read in the doctor’s office.
You will need to hand in:
· your poster/model (with its literature cited on the back)
· the pamphlet (which must include footnotes and a literature cited). I will not grade it if it does not.
Neatness counts.
Bibliography- at least 5 sources.
Option E: web
site: I need
to be able to access it from the internet.
Be sure to include:
System
• the function (s)
• the anatomy: of the organ/system itself as well as in the body
• how to keep it healthy
Disease
• causes / prevention
• human impact- how it effects you life if you have it
•
cures/ treatments
You will need to create a cover page and the rest of the information
will be on
pages linked to that page

Are the facts complete and detailed
Did you answer the questions below
Is the science correct?
I will look for depth of research; evidence that you actually
USED at
least 7 sources- more is better.
