(9/97- adapted from an activity from Glenn Simpson ) Biological Fiction Report

    Over the summer: Due 9/12/08
Chose a fiction book from the list attached. Sign up with me. Only 1 person can read each book!

• As you read the book take notes summarize the chapters and mark sections which will help you answer the following questions. You must answer in sentence and paragraph form. While writing your answers, remember that the object is for someone to be able to tell that you actually READ the book. Make quotes and take examples directly from the book. Cite these by using the author’s last name, year and page # in parenthesis at the end of the citation (parenthetical notation).

ex: A. "You have to have a suspect before you can match the DNA sample to the cat’s claws. The last I heard, a comprehensive DNA database like the FBI’s fingerprint file didn’t exist yet ( Kennett, 1997 p. 68). "

   B. " In the past , scientists and police had very little success in lifting prints from non-porous objects such as plastic bags, electrical tape and leather. Then, it was discovered, quite by accident, that the fumes form Super Glue adhere to ridge detail, much as traditional dusting powder does and out pops a white latent print (Cornwell, 1999 p.170)"

1.    Take notes on each chapter as you read. Then, summarize each chapter in the story. You may want to do this in a notebook as you read the story. This will be due  September 12, 2008. No late papers will be accepted. (50 pts)

Questions: answer in well written complete sentences and paragraphs.
Include quotations from the book  for # 3 and 4. (these should be indented and footnoted)

Answer the following in a cohesive report (Do not # it and answer like questions).

2.     Summarize the plot of the story. It is OK to summarize the ending- you are summarizing the entire story.  Do not say things like, "in this book..." Or, "this story tells...". This     should be a brief summary; no more than 100-175 words. You should not include quotations from the book in this section. It is YOUR summary. Use your own words. Do not copy from the book jacket, but it should read like a book jacket "blurb". (25 pts)

3.     Describe three (3) scientific procedures used in the book. Research the procedures and give additional information.  You must use at least two (2) sources in your research of each procedure. Was the science correctly described in the novel? Is the science in the novel POSSIBLE in real life? for example, if you used quote A above, you would research DNA profiling. Does a comprehensive DNA database exist?
If you used quote B, you would research fingerprinting techniques and super glue fuming.
Include the sources you used in your research in your literature cited.
(75 pts total)

4.     Chose one of the main characters in the book. If you were this person, how would your actions, reactions, or feelings compare to theirs. You must include three (3) specific situations in this section.(30 pts). I expect a detailed analysis and a good description of the situation as well as your opinions. Explain yourself.
