Mrs. Wright’s Gemini Bio grading procedures:

Grading    Cheating       Notebooks        Assignments        Labs  Raising your grade   Test rewrite format

MY PHILOSOPHY:

• Everyone starts with a 100 average. It is up to you to keep it.

• You should be able to earn whatever grade you would like.

• If you do all your work on time, I promise you will pass. If you can’t earn a passing grade, and you are doing all assignments, then I must not be doing my job very well.

GRADING: Your grade will be calculated as a weighted average as follows: I take the total # of points you earned and divide it by the total possible.
For example if you get the following grades:
quiz         35/50     (70%)
HW #1     10/10     (100%)
HW #2     9/10        (90%)
                    your average would be 54 / 70=     77%

**** Notice that this is a weighted average. The quiz was worth more points, so it had a greater effect on the overall average. QUIZZES, TESTS, LABS AND PROJECTS WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST EFFECT ON YOU OVERALL AVERAGE.

Homework will be worth 20 points each, labs are worth 50 points each, quizzes are usually 10-15 points(1 point per question)  and tests are worth 100 points each.

I will post your grades using your private ID # so that you can see how you’re doing and check my math.If you do NOT want your grades posted, please let me know.

I will use your average as of Sunday each week to determine the eligibility list. If you owe work be sure to hand it in by 3:00 on Friday so that you can remain eligible.
CHEATING: Cheating will NOT be tolerated. If  you copy someone's paper, both you and the person from whom you copied will receive a grade of zero. I will call home. As Shakespeare said " neither a borrower or a lender be". NOTEBOOKS: You may choose what you want to use for notes and handouts. There will be many. Whatever you pick, you must have it each day for class. I will give you a notebook each semester with the notes and assignments in it.

ASSIGNMENTS: Heading:
                    Full Name                     course title
date                             assignment (pg. #s and Question #s)
Late assignments: -10%

They are due at the start of class. "In my locker" or "someone locked my locker," means it is late

I will take off 10% per day from labs as well as projects up to 30 % off.

I will not accept assignments more than 1 week late

When absent: Pick up work from the absentee work file. You have as many days to make up work as you were absent. IF you have a lesson or a field trip so that you miss class you still are responsible for turning in work and picking up assignments. If you are in the building that day you are "here". You have the schedule for tests. I will expect you to take tests on the scheduled day even if you were absent the day before. If you are absent on a test day you will take the test on the day you return.

Grammar spelling and neatness count on all papers. A 100% paper must be really perfect.

Homework papers do not have to be typed. Labs and projects must be typed.

LABS: Labs are a major part of your grade (usually 50 pts). They must be completed with a written lab report unless I tell you otherwise. The written lab report will be 1/2 of the grade(questions will be half of the grade). Labs will be due 1 week from when we completed the lab(usually on a Wednesday). Hand them in 2 days early (Monday) for 10% extra credit.

ALL LABS must be typed to receive 100%. (Un-typed labs start at 95%)

There will be no rewrites.

RAISING YOUR GRADE: You may earn extra credit by doing abstracts of articles from science journal articles I post on the bonus board. See format attached. Each abstract   is worth +1 on your average, up to +10 total per quarter. I will post an article weekly which you may write an abstract on. Abstracts are due Mondays. If you find an article from a scientific journal (Science News, Scientific American, Discover, Conservationist, Nursing etc.) which you would like to abstract, show it to me for approval.

I will not curve test grades. You may rewrite your test to raise your grades afterwards using the following format. I will give you full credit for each question correctly rewritten in this manner. You may NOT rewrite essay questions. You will not be able to rewrite quizzes.

I will give you a list of potential essay questions at the start of each unit. Look them up! Ask questions before the test day !!!!!!!!!

Test rewrite format:
You must use this format to recieve credit. you must also turn in the old copy of your test and all answer sheets. Even if you do not do rewrites, you need to resubmit your test.
  • Why is your answer incorrect( Do Not tell me why you picked the wrong answer- tell me what makes the answer you selected incorrect)
  • What is the correct answer?
  • Tell me why that is the correct answer- EXPLAIN it.

Be sure to number each question which you rewrite as it was numbered on the test.

There are no HW passes in AP Biology, and no lab rewrites!
